I have a crush on UNIQLO’s Social Media Team

Jul 12, 2011 by

It started last week when I saw a status update from their fan page that said:
UNIQLO is a great example of social media done right!

Hello everyone! We’d like to ask all UNIQLOvers to please post a picture of their favorite spot in their city. No fancy photos needed! We’re preparing a little something for you proud fans out there! To be continued…

I always thought they did a great job with interacting with their fans so I figured I’d give it a shot and see where it goes. In the past, they’ve used several photos submitted by fans as their profile picture. I predicted a comment about the picture here, a joke there and then calling it a day. That didn’t happen. What happened instead is something that really puts the SOCIAL in social media! And it all happened in less than 24 hours. They weren’t trying to sell anything, they didn’t care about any issues that might come up. All they wanted was to keep a conversation going with a fan that posted a photo on their wall. They also never had the conversation leave the wall (note how I asked them for an email at some point) because transparency rocks! A long conversation later, they were able to turn me into a mega-fan (what I call myself now), gain over 1000 “likes” from other fans and generate close to a 100 comments on the photo album.
I chose to upload THIS PHOTO that lead to the following conversation:

UNIQLO CHICAGOOOO!! Love the place!! Where would you recommend to UNIQLO?

Sami Ari State Street! So I can UNIQLO on my lunch break.

UNIQLO That would be really nice! What items would you like buy on your lunch break? By the way, have you been in Japan?

Sami Ari Yes, I have been to Japan and just came from Tokyo last month. My friends always laugh at me that my 1st stop when I get to Tokyo is head to one of the the UNIQLOs in Shinjuku and buy few of their great tshirts but I also love their dress shirts that I can look great wearing to work! I hope that you’ll come to Chicago soon!

UNIQLO AH! Did you enjoy your time in Japan? Was it for vacation? Mega store in 新宿 is a great place to shopping, isn’t it? if you have a couple of pictures you took in japan, we would like to see:) Feel free to share your experiences and ideas with us, Sami! Great to meet you:)

Sami Ari Yes! It was vacation. I had to go to prove to people it’s safe! Took tons of photos but my favorite experience is having great food & company at an izakaya in 渋谷 but I also have a guilty pleasure for プリクラ。

UNIQLO Hi, Sami! How are you? I, we love to know your experiences in Japan, so no apology needed:) So can we see your pictures in japan soon? Would be nice!!

Sami Ari You’re far too kind. Are you also in Japan? I hope you enjoy them and let me know if you do! :-) http://www.flickr.com/photos/tokyofan/sets/72157626792047853/

UNIQLO Sami, these are wonderful pictures. Thank you for sharing. Can we do some brainstorming here? What do you think if we make a photo album like “Uniq-memories in Japan” ? I think UNIQLOvers here like Japan so they may enjoy by sharing photos taken in Japan like yours.

Sami Ari eeeh さすが UNIQLO! What a fantastic idea! People always say that we have different view points even if we’re taking the same picture, something like Uniq-eye/Uniq-view of Japan & Uniq-memories sounds great! I think people always love hearing stories too so maybe the caption can be 2-3 sentences about the funny/scary/sad/embaressing story behind the photo?

UNIQLO Agree! So can we start “Uniq-memories” from your memories(photos)? We would like to share your beautiful photos and memories with UNIQLOvers if you don’t mind. Let us know what you think.

Sami Ari That would be an honor. Let me know how you’d like me to proceed. Post them on UNIQLO‘s wall? Email?

UNIQLO Can you allow us to use your photos to start create a photo album? Once we post the album “Uniq-memories”, then we would love you to share your memories with people:) We will also put a credit by your name. Thank you, Sami!

Sami Ari Go for it! :-)

UNIQLO Hope you will like it and also UNIQLOvers also have Uniq-memory in Japan like yours:)

So about less than 30 minutes later, they created the album on their wall! Even more, two days later they used a photo again HERE.  Now you understand why they rock?

I’d like you to think what companies do you think does a great job in their social media practices?
